Construction Sector and the Circular Economy Series – Episode 1
Construction Sector and the Circular Economy Series – Episode 1
This programme series is designed to analyse the different aspects of the Construction sector’s Transition in the Circular Economy, where presenters from different expertise and background are invited to guide the Members through this journey.
Built environment and construction sector is one of the most resource intense and waste producing sectors and has a significant impact on many sectors of the economy, on local jobs and quality of life. The different life-cycle stages of buildings, from construction to end-of-life, cause significant social, environmental and economic impacts including the increasing energy consumption, waste generation, direct and indirect greenhouse gas emissions, as well as the wasted capacity of buildings.
A circular economy approach will keep buildings, products and materials at their highest value for as long as possible, promoting more sustainable building construction and reducing the impact on our environment. This sector is one of the 7 Key Product Value Chains identified by the European Commission as Priority Sectors and upcoming Strategies and Initiatives for a Sustainable Built Environment will be launched in the coming years that will impact energy and resource efficiency, management of construction and demolition waste, accessibility, digitalisation and skills in the Sector. It will promote circularity principles throughout the lifecycle of buildings. If you are interested in starting the journey transitioning to a more sustainable way of construction, sign up to this course!
What you will learn in this series
• Build a strong understanding on circularity as a systemic, multi-disciplinary approach, concerned with the different scale, from material to product, building, city, and region.
• Analyse how businesses can close several materials loops in the construction and renovation of buildings by applying circular principles and circular supply chains;
• Learn how customers can be engaged along the journey and contribute to the transition through new business models enabling circular design, reuse, repair, remanufacturing and recycling of building components;
• Explore how architecture and urban circular design can be applied to a variety of cases.
• Learn how companies already profitably incorporate this new theory into the design, construction and operation of the built environment.
• Identify the different levels of circularity required for the transition of the built environment – from materials and products to buildings and cities.
• Analyse circular design principles in buildings and products and how these affect the business modes.
• Discuss the impact of designing and building a circular building on economy, society and the environment during its life-cycle.
• Understand and analyse the complexity and variety of possible circular solutions in terms of energy, water and waste management.
